ASCENSION JIU-JITSU OPEN 2007

As the official host of the first qualifier for the upcoming Grand Prix, we are happy to invite you to our tournament, ASCENSION JIU-JITSU OPEN 2007 on January 27th at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School in Scarborough, Ontario (685 Military Trail--off Mornigside Avenue, south of HWY 401).

Here are some features to take note of this year:

- EXPRESS CHECK-IN for all pre-registrants! Optional pre-registration on the night before the event will allow adult competitors the benefit of checking in up to four (4) pounds above their weight limit on the day of the event. In addition, competitors that pre-register will bypass the usually congested registration line-ups, proceeding directly to the weight scales.

- No-Gi divisions commence at 10:30am; Gi divisions commence at 2:00pm. Note: weigh-ins for Gi divisions close at 12:00pm.

- 2007 Grand Prix divisions are SINGLE-ELIMINATION (with the exception of divisions with 5 competitors or less) to help facilitate timely events.

- SUPERFIGHTS!!! TBA

- Last year, we had a great showing in our children's divisions--we will hold Gi divisions for children (7-11 years) and youth (12-15 years).

- A New JUNIORS Division (16-17 years) will be included in this year's Grand Prix!

- There will be FOOD at this event--concessions open at 11:30am.

Here are some key details of the tournament:

PRE-REGISTRATION (at Salvosa BJJ Ascension, January 26th)

Pre-registration at Salvosa BJJ Ascension Martial Arts Academy: 31 Progress Avenue (Unit 19), Scarborough, Ontario (401 & Kennedy Road) on Friday, January 26th from 5:00-8:00pm. On tournament day, pre-registrants will proceed directly to the weight scales for EXPRESS CHECK-IN, bypassing both registration lineups (CJA & competition).

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS (at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School, January 27th)

Final weigh-ins for Children & Youth: 8:00-9:00am
Final weigh-ins for Junior/Adult No-Gi divisions: 8:00-9:30am
Final weigh-ins for Junior/Adult Gi divisions: 8:00am-12:00pm
Rules Clinic: 10:00am
Children and Youth divisions commence at 9:30am
Junior/Adult No-Gi divisions commence at 10:30am
Junior/Adult Gi divisions commence at 2:00pm

FEES

An annual Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Association (CJA) membership is mandatory for all competitors participating in CJA-sanctioned events. The membership is valid for one year and is paid ONE-TIME only for all sancitioned events occurring throughout the year (from the date of purchase).

Annual CJA membership is $25 for adults (16 years and over) and $15 for children/youth.

Pre-registration on January 26th:
Children & Youth: $35
Juniors/Adults: $40 for one event and $55 for both (Gi/No-Gi) events

Tournament Day (January 27th):
Children & Youth: $40
Juniors/Adults: $45 for one event and $60 for both (Gi/No-Gi) events
Spectators: $10 for general admission; $5 for children 12 years and under

Children’s Divisions (7 to 11 years): No submissions, control point scoring.
Children’s divisions will be organized by age and weight on the day of the event, Gi only.

Youth Divisions (12 to 15 years): Limited submissions, control point scoring.
Youth divisions will be organized by weight on the day of the event and will allow limited submissions, Gi only.
Submissions NOT permitted: Leg locks (straight or twisting), wrist locks, pressure points, neck cranks.

Junior Divisions (16 to 17 years): Limited submissions, control point scoring (Gi and No-Gi).
Submissions NOT permitted: Leg locks (straight or twisting), wrist locks, pressure points, neck cranks.

Athletes under the age of 18 years must have parent of guardian complete waiver.

ADULT DIVISIONS

Skill levels for both women and men:
Beginner: 0 to 1.5 years experience
Intermediate: 1.5 to 3 years experience
Advanced: 3 years experience and over

Divisions for both Gi and No-Gi:
Women’s Divisions: 124.9 pounds and under; 125.0 pounds and over
Men’s Divisions:
Lightweight 139.9 pounds and under
Welterweight 140.0 to 154.9 pounds
Middleweight 155.0 to 169.9 pounds
Light Heavyweight 170.0 to 184.9 pounds
Cruiserweight 185.0 to 204.9 pounds
Heavyweight 205.0 to 224.9 pounds
Super Heavyweight 225.0 pounds and over

All athletes must complete event waiver before competing.

All athletes must provide proof of age at the event.
