Grand Prix Rules & Tournament Format

GRAND PRIX FORMAT

Each qualifier within the 2007 Ontario Grappling Grand Prix will hold single-elimination divisions for GI and NO-GI competition. All competitors participating in the Grand Prix will accumulate points in both divisions towards an overall score. The top four competitors in each skill and weight division (eg. BEGINNER 140-154.9 lbs) will be invited to the finals in June, where they will compete in both a GI and a NO-GI competition bracket to determine the overall winner for each division. The title of GRAND CHAMPION will be awarded to the competitor that accumulates the most overall points (wins) in both the GI and NO-GI brackets at the finals.

SKILL LEVELS & WEIGHT CLASSES

Beginners: 0 - 1.5 years experience
Intermediate: 1.5 - 3 years experience
Advanced: 3 years experience and over

Women's Divisions:
Featherweight: 124.9 lbs and under
Lightweight: 125.0 lbs and over

Men's Divisions:
Featherweight: 139.9 lbs and under
Lightweight: 140.0 - 154.9 lbs.
Welterweight: 155.0 - 169.9 lbs.
Middleweight: 170.0 - 184.9 lbs.
Cruiserweight: 185.0 - 204.5 lbs.
Heavyweight: 205.0 - 225 lbs.

ACCUMULATION OF POINTS

- Each competitor will receive two (2) points for participating in the GI division and two (2) points for participating in the NO-GI division of each qualifier tournament.

- Competitors will receive one (1) point for every win by submission over their opponent.

- Competitors that finish in 1st Place will receive 12 points

- Competitors that finish in 2nd Place will receive 10 points

- Competitors that finish in 3rd Place will receive 8 points

- Competitors that finish in 4th Place will receive 6 points

- Competitors may compete in the skill level that applies to their status at the start of the first qualifier tournament (eg. a competitor with 1 year and 5 months experience on January 27th may compete in the Beginner division in all Grand Prix tournaments for this year).

- Competitors will receive accumulating points within their respective weight divisions ONLY (eg. a competitor that fights in [BEGINNER 140.0-154.9 lbs] will receive points in this division provided that he/she competes at this weight at all GRAND PRIX tournmanents; if the competitor fights at [BEGINNER 155.0-169.9 lbs] at one of the qualifiers, any points he/she accumulates will not apply to his/her overall score for [BEGINNER 140.0-154.9 lbs]).

POINT SCORING

The point scoring for GI divisions at all qualifiers & the finals is as follows:

Takedown - 2 points
Sweep - 2 points
Knee-on-Belly - 2 points
Passing the Guard - 3 points
Mount - 4 points
Rear Mount - 4 points
Failure to Engage/Penalties - (-1) point

In the event of a tie, the winner of the match will be determined by advantage(s).

The point scoring for NO-GI divisions at all qualifiers & the finals is as follows:

Takedown - 2 points
Sweep - 2 points
Knee-on-Belly - 2 points
Passing the Guard - 3 points
Mount - 3 points
Rear Mount - 3 points
Sitting to Guard - (-1) point
Failure to Engage/Penalties - (-1) point

In the event of a tie, the winner of the match will be determined by advantage(s).
